During Georgia-Abkhazia war of 1992-1993 two former colleagues, one Georgian, one Abkhazian took up arms on opposite sides. Thanks to a videoconference technology they got the opportunity of seeing each other and speaking about possible solutions to resolve the conflict, to share with the audience their impressions of the conversations.
The documentary ’’Together and Apart’’ addresses the conflict between the central Georgian government and its breakaway region of Abkhazia.
The film was presented in Tbilisi in 2005 to the Georgian public. It was distributed and widely viewed within the rest of Georgia and journalists from Abkhazia, while the authorities of the Abkhaz region refused to allow it to be broadcast, or even shown in public halls. In May 2006 some 100 Caucasus specialists and analysts gathered at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Science Sociale (EHESS) in Paris to watch and critique ’Together Apart’, to discuss the conflict and possible solutions to resolve the conflict.

Zugdidi, Georgia, the last village before you enter Abkhazia, where many Georgians who lived in the separatist region before the conflict have now sought refuge. A mother plays with her child in the hall of a “temporary” centre for displaced people. I like this picture because it shows hope, in sharp contrast to some of the other scenes I witnessed in this context.

”What would you say to Abkhaz People 15 years later?”

-“Human Rights Centre” applied to the whole Georgia with the question. The demonstration initially was held in Tbilisi and then in five regions of Georgia. “I love you, Abkhazia!”, “We do not want Abkhazia without Abkhazians!”, “Let’s love each other like we did 15 years ago”… These were the messages people wrote in almost every region. These demonstrations showed that Georgian people take a positive view to Abkhazians and they want to resolve problems with them only through peaceful way. During the word demonstrations people were given candies with little papers where Abkhazian and Georgian words were written.

”რას ეტყოდით აფხაზ ხალხს 15 წლის შემდეგ” - ეს იყო კითხვა, რომლითაც ,,ადამიანის უფლებათა ცენტრმა” მთელ საქართველოს მიმართა. აქცია ჯერ თბილისში გაიმართა, შემდეგ - საქართველოს ხუთ რეგიონში. “აფხაზეთო, მიყვარხარ!”, “აფხაზეთი აფხაზების გარეშე არ გვინდა!”, ,,გვიყვარდეს ერთმანეთი ისე, როგორც 15 წლის უკან”… ამგვარი გზავნილები დაწერა ხალხმა გურჯაანიდან ზუგდიდამდე. აქციამ აჩვენა, რომ ქართველები აფხაზების მიმართ დადებითად არიან განწყობილნი და მათთან ურთიერთობის მოგვარება მხოლოდ მშვიდობიანი გზით სურთ. აქციაზე ხალხს დაურიგდათ კანფეტები, მასზე მიმაგრებული პატარა ფურცლებით. ფურცლებზე აფხაზური სიტყვები და მათი ქართული შესატყვისი ეწერა.

It’s about Caucasus, about how we love and kill one another. When i was painting i was thinking about Georgia and Abkhazia…
